Contrary to popular belief, the Aztec Sundial is not a calendar. Also known as the "Mexica Sun Stone" and the "Stone of the Sun", the symbol portrays the disasters that led to the demise of four past universes in Aztec myth. The hieroglyphs do describe how the Aztecs measured time, which is why it is often mistaken as a calendar system. To the Aztecs it was a religious and cosmological symbol.
